Designed for active RNs, the NCCU Online: RN to BSN Flight Path Program is built on 30 credit hours (22 core nursing credits, plus 8 elective credits). All courses are 100% online asynchronous and offered in eight-week terms.

The RN to BSN is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

During the practicum experience, students will complete a 45-hour Community Assessment Project in an appropriate setting approved by the Prelicensure Clinical Coordinator, community Nursing faculty, and the Director of the RN-BSN program.

The total number of credit hours required for graduation varies based on evaluation of your transfer credits. A minimum of 30 credits earned at NCCU is required for graduation.

Dr. Sujayalakshmi Devarayasamudram is an associate professor on tenure track in the Department of Nursing at NCCU. With over 45 years of teaching experience, Dr. Devarayasamudram has taught students from distinct levels and at various locations across the globe. In India, she worked at Government College of Nursing Hyderabad, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. She also worked at St. John’s College of Nursing, Bengaluru, Karnataka and Muscat Nursing Institute, Sultanate of Oman.

Dr. Pam Edwards recently retired after 33 years from the Duke University Health System where she served as Assistant Vice President for Education, Practice & Research and Deputy Director of the Duke AHEC Program Office. She is currently the Assistant Dean for IPE and Chair and Director of the Catherine W. Wood School of Nursing at Campbell University. A seasoned nurse educator, she taught at the Duke University School of Nursing for twenty-three years and joined Project Kitty Hawk at NCCU in 2023.

Dr. Katrina Green has over 27 years of health care experience with many years as a nurse educator specializing in staff development. She is an adjunct faculty member at the NCCU Department of Nursing, having taught for the undergraduate program, accelerated program, and the RN to BSN program. Her health care career began as a nursing assistant and found a career that she felt she belonged. She went on to earn her Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from Durham Tech.

With 22 years of nursing experience, Dr. Ertha Jeter is a proud adjunct faculty member for the Department of Nursing at NCCU. Her nursing career began as a licensed practical nurse in 2003. In 2005, she obtained her BSN and continued her education with a Master of Science in Nursing MSN as an adult nurse practitioner in 2010. She completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2022 and began working as program director for a highly regarded nurse practitioner residency, where she provides structured guidance and mentorship to recent graduate nurse practitioners.

Patrick McMurray is an RN with a primary background in cardiovascular care. He started his career as an ADN-prepared RN in 2013. His clinical practice has spanned from critical care — working in an adult cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) in rural North Carolina — to community-based nursing roles. In 2022, McMurray completed an MSN from Western Governors University with a focus on nursing education. He maintains his clinical practice working as a per diem home health nurse.

What You Need For Admission

NCCU Online: Flight Path Programs seeks students who embody inner strength and unwavering commitment to patient care, preparing culturally competent, equity-minded nurses to take on top issues in health care and advance their careers.

NCCU is committed to providing equal educational opportunities and does not discriminate against applicants on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or ability. Please review the below requirements for admission to the online RN to BSN, a flight path program.

  • Completed application for admission.

  • Documentation of an active, unencumbered RN license.

  • Official transcripts of all college coursework sent from the institution(s) with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

  • List of academic courses in progress (if applicable).

  • Supportive documents such as personal essays and recommendation letters are welcomed, but not required.

Transfer applicants to NCCU’s undergraduate programs must meet the following requirements:

  • Has completed at least 24 transferable credit hours from the last or current institution attended.

    • If an applicant has earned less than 24 hours of acceptable credit, they may be reviewed and asked to send SAT or ACT scores.

  • Has a cumulative GPA of a “C” or better and eligibility to return to the current or last institution.

  • Has evidence of participating in scholastic, community, and civic organizations — including leadership participation.

  • Must not be on academic probation at a previous or current institution; must not have been suspended or expelled from a previous or current institution.

Please note the following:

  • NCCU will only recognize associate degrees and transfer credits conferred by an accredited institution

  • NCCU will not accept a transfer course with a grade lower than a “C.” Accepted courses are recorded on a student’s transcript; grades and grade points are not calculated.

  • NCCU does not accept transfer credit from challenge examinations or for coursework graded pass/fail.

  • The maximum number of transferable credits is 90 semester hours from a four-year college, and 64 semester hours from a two-year college, with a total maximum of 90 credit hours (combined two-year and four-year credits).

  • To qualify for in-state tuition rates, North Carolina residents must first confirm their in-state status by completing an application through the Residency Determination Service (RDS). To learn more about how to apply for NC residency, please refer to the NC Residency Tuition information page.

A GPA of 2.5 is required for application consideration. Applicants to the online RN to BSN program will automatically receive 61 advanced placement credits for completing an associate degree in nursing. Applicants may transfer up to 30 general education credits contingent on transcript review by the registrar.

RN to BSN applicants must transfer 30 credit hours in general education coursework or complete the courses at NCCU prior to starting the RN to BSN program. Please review the list of accepted courses below.
